Sustainable Energy Solutions Group

Northern Arizona University (NAU)

Northern Arizona University (NAU) is a doctoral-intensive institution that has at its core undergraduate programs, significant research, and graduate programs (http://www.nau.edu/). NAU provides students with an innovative and challenging liberal arts and sciences core integrated with a comprehensive number of professional programs. Key entities with NAU that support the conference are the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences (http://www.cet.nau.edu/) and the Sustainable Energy Solutions Group (http://ses.nau.edu). The College of Engineering and Natural Sciences offers several Bachelor of Science degrees including four engineering programs, computer science, and construction management, and Master of Engineering degrees in five areas. The mission of the Sustainable Energy Solutions Group is to provide society with broadly educated energy experts and new technologies, as well as to help shape energy decision-making in both the private and public sectors while increasing the public’s energy literacy.  The group is composed of several faculty, staff and students from the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences and the College of Business Administration. NAU, known as the Mountain Campus, is unmatched for natural beauty and for student-centered programs and services.

Sandia National Laboratories

Since 1949, Sandia National Laboratories has developed science-based technologies that support our national security. Today, the nearly 300 million Americans depend on Sandia's technology solutions to solve national and global threats to peace and freedom.  Through science and technology, people, infrastructure, and partnerships, Sandia's Energy and Infrastructure Assurance mission is to enhance the surety of energy and other critical infrastructures. The Energy and Infrastructure Assurance program supports Sandia's core purpose of helping our nation secure a peaceful and free world through technology. Our goal is to enhance the surety (safety, security, and reliability) of energy and other critical infrastructures.  Sandia is a government-owned/contractor operated (GOCO) facility. Lockheed Martin manages Sandia for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration. We seek collaborative partnerships on emerging technologies that support our mission.

The Grand Canyon Trust

The Grand Canyon Trust (GCT) is a regional non-profit conservation organization whose mission is to protect and restore the canyon country of the Colorado Plateau-its spectacular landscapes, flowing rivers, clean air, diversity of plants and animals, and areas of beauty and solitude. The Trust has a long history of working on air quality issues focused on protecting visibility. However, given the potentially devastating effects of global warming on the ecological heritage of the Grand Canyon and Colorado Plateau, the Trust is actively promoting the development of clean, renewable energy.

Salt River Project

Salt River Project (SRP) provides electricity to nearly 860,000 retail customers in the Phoenix area.  It operates or participates in 11 major power plants and numerous other generating stations using.  In addition to traditional generating sources, SRP also seeks clean renewable energy sources through its EarthWise Energy program. EarthWise Energy is a more environmentally friendly way to produce electricity whether it be energy from the sun, wind, the earth's heat, flowing water in our canals and even decomposing garbage in landfills.

To date, SRP has installed two large solar plants, a low-impact hydroelectric facility at the historic Arizona Falls at 56th Street and Indian School and a landfill gas-to-energy plant on the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community.  In addition, SRP is purchasing geothermal energy from California's Imperial Valley as well as wind energy from a wind farm
located in New Mexico.

Currently, more than 5,000 customers have signed up to receive EarthWise Energy for a small monthly fee.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that 12 months of participation in EarthWise Energy has an impact on the environment that is similar to planting two acres of trees or not driving an SUV for 12 months,   For more information about SRP's renewable technologies, or EarthWise Energy, please e-mail enviro@srpnet.com

Western Resource Advocates

Western Resource Advocates (formerly the Land and Water Fund of the Rockies) is a non-profit environmental law and policy organization dedicated to restoring and protecting the natural environment of the Interior American West. Strategic program areas include Water, Energy and Lands. Western Resource Advocates uses law, economics, and policy analysis to protect land and water resources, protect essential habitats for plants and animals, and assure that energy demands are met in environmentally sound and sustainable ways. WRA meets its goals in collaboration with other environmental and community groups and by developing solutions that are appropriate to the unique environmental, economic and cultural framework of the region. WRA's Energy Project promotes sustainable energy technologies-such as energy efficiency, solar and wind power, and the cleanup of dirty power plants-in six states in the Rocky Mountain and Desert Southwest region, relying on an interdisciplinary team to develop policies and markets to support expanded clean energy investments. To date, WRA's work in the energy arena has helped catalyze over half a billion dollars of investments in clean energy technologies and has directly reduced pollutant emissions by tens of thousands of tons.

A Personal Commitment to New Mexico

PNM is an integrated utility serving more than 413,000 electric customers and 471,000 gas customers in New Mexico. PNM is a subsidiary of PNM Resources, an energy holding company based in Albuquerque. Among several environmental goals PNM has adopted for itself, the company strives to become known as a national leader in providing and promoting renewable energy. PNM purchases all of the energy generated at the 200 megawatt (MW) New Mexico Wind Energy Center located near House, NM. PNM offers wind energy to retail and commercial customers through PNM Sky Blue™, a voluntary subscription program.  In 2005, PNM will build a 25 kilowatt solar photovoltaic facility, develop a customer-owned solar photovoltaic program, and study the feasibility of building a 10 to 50 MW biomass facility.
